Saints from Sinner Day 1

We have made it here safely. Although it was a very tiresome and after a long flight to get here I can tell it is going to be worth it. Who ever knew flying in a plane for 14 hours could throw you off drastically. Aside from all that, when we got to Rome. We checked into our apartments and headed straight for The Piazza Navona where the St. Agnes Basilica is located. Flooded with tourist and locals we made our way through to see some of the beautiful sites within the basilica even part of her skull is preserved there. We then had our first taste of Rome Pizza and gelato, then off to go see then Pantheon where we say multiple statues of saints and other murals. We then had the opportunity to meet up with a group of Jesuit priest and celebrate mass with them. A total of walking 6.3 miles around Rome and many more to come in the week. (Pictures)

Hello! My name is Chris Siemann and this is my 3 rd year teaching Theology at Strake Jesuit. I am a Notre Dame double graduate from the suburbs of Chicago, so I am surprised to have ended up in Houston—and to have enjoyed it as much as I have thus far! I am a parishioner at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. My biggest distraction will likely be mixing chaperone duties with pilgrim opportunities. While I certainly look forward to all the prayerful opportunities, my duty to facilitate these opportunities for the seniors to maximize the potential of their experience comes first. I am sure there will be a healthy tension there! I am not quite sure what particular graces God has in store for me this pilgrimage, and that excites me! Day 5 Reflection- Jordi

Day 5:  Hook : When was the last time you felt true anger? When was the last time you felt your anger against another was justified and even respectable? Today, I feel victim to such feelings. If not for our time crunch, I can honestly say that I might have exploded.  Long and boring summary of our day : Today was probably my favorite day of the pilgrimage. My apartment started the day early with a great breakfast of eggs (shoutout to Basil) followed by, of course, a quick stop at an Italian coffeehouse. We saw the Pope up close today, attending a papal audience where Pope Francis spoke beautifully and blessed all 1,846,240 of John’s rosaries along with whatever the rest of us brought. Next we took a long and leisurely lunch and gelato break, slowly working our way though the Coliseum and St. John Lateran’s baptistry all the way to Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. Carry the Fire

The motto I chose for this pilgrimage was “To carry the fire and to go out and spread it.” I found this quote in a book that we read earlier this called “The Road” and I changed it up a little to where it would work for this pilgrimage. The characters goal in this book was to carry this fire with him until the end of the story. The fire represents the spirit within us. We carry our spirit with us at all times and during this pilgrimage not only was I able to carry it with me but I was able to expand the growth of my spirit and was able to grow closer to God in many different forms. Not only was this applied to the pilgrimage but this is a motto I go off of everyday. My goal is to find God in all things and with knowing that my spirit is with me to guide me through this helps out a lot.
