God in the Details

Throughout these last few days, I have thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful art and architecture of Rome. At each church, I am awestruck by the splendor and magnificence of the paintings, sculptures, and construction. Every small detail is gracefully done, uniting as one to produce a masterpiece. All these pieces join together to form the magnificent churches that have amazed visitors for centuries.

Today, our group had the opportunity to visit multiple churches. We first saw the basilica of St. Clements, then ventured to the basilicas of St. John Lateran and Mary Major, before finishing off with the minor basilica of St. Peter in Chains. At every site, I was in awe of the rich artwork and decorations. There was plenty of elaborate paintings, intricate stoneworks, lifelike statues, towering pillars, and other marvelous works. No expense was spared.

As our group journeyed through the day, I kept reflecting on the meaning of all these worldly decorations. I wondered why the Church would spend so much on these magnificent churches when the money resources could be used elsewhere. However, as I reflected throughout the day, I saw that the art had a deeper meaning than just being a superficial decoration. Experiencing the splendor at each church, I found myself drawn to prayer and self-reflection. I realized that the art was not just for entertainment, but to glorify God and inspire the faith of the people. Branching from this greater meaning, the art was able to achieve its spectacular beauty. Seeing this, I was able to relate this to my own life. By finding my life’s greater meaning in God, I can achieve inner beauty within my soul.
